What plumbers do in BC
Plumbers in BC install, maintain, and repair water supply, drainage, and mechanical systems on residential, commercial, and industrial projects. The Plumber trade is Red Seal designated in Canada, though certification is voluntary. Quantus will verify the trade credentials, regulatory certificates, insurance, and WorkSafeBC status applicable to each tradesperson and the work they perform — a plumber without a Certificate of Qualification isn't missing anything required by law, but some plumbing-adjacent work (gasfitting, cross-connection control) does require its own separate, mandatory credential regardless of whether the plumber holds a C of Q.

Certification is voluntary for plumbers in BC — many invest in it anyway. Quantus will verify the certifications, insurance, and WorkSafeBC coverage a plumber does hold at onboarding, so employers can tell verified credentials from claims. Note that voluntary status covers only the general trade — some specialized work can still carry its own separate, mandatory credential.
In British Columbia, certification for plumbers is voluntary — there's no legal requirement to hold a Certificate of Qualification or Red Seal to work as a plumber. Many do hold certification anyway. Quantus will verify whichever trade credentials, insurance, and WorkSafeBC status a plumber holds at tradesperson onboarding — including any separate, mandatory credentials required for specific scopes of work like gasfitting.

Is plumbing a licensed trade in BC?
Plumbing certification in BC is voluntary — there's no legal requirement to hold a Certificate of Qualification or Red Seal to work as a plumber. That said, voluntary certification for the plumbing trade itself doesn't cover every scope of work a plumber might perform: gasfitting requires separate mandatory certification, while backflow-testing requirements depend on the applicable municipality or cross-connection-control program.
Can a plumber also do gas fitting in BC?
Not automatically. Gasfitting is a separate compulsory certified trade in BC. A plumber who wants to work on natural gas or propane systems must also hold the applicable BC Gasfitter Certificate of Qualification.
What plumbing work requires a permit in BC?
Plumbing permit requirements vary by municipality and by the scope of work — they are not the same everywhere in BC. Check the applicable local authority before work begins; your plumber can help confirm what is required for your specific project.
