What welders do in BC
Welders are critical to BC construction, shipbuilding, oil and gas, and manufacturing. The general Welder trade is Red Seal designated in Canada, and certification is voluntary. That voluntary status covers only the general trade credential — specialized welding work can carry its own mandatory qualifications on top of it. Structural welding governed by the BC Building Code typically requires the welder's company to hold CWB (Canadian Welding Bureau) certification and the individual welder to hold the applicable CWB welder qualification for the process, position, and material involved. Pressure welding on regulated equipment (boilers, pressure vessels, piping) is separately regulated by Technical Safety BC and requires the appropriate TSBC pressure welder certificate. Certification is voluntary for welders in BC — many invest in it anyway. Quantus will verify the certifications, insurance, and WorkSafeBC coverage a welder does hold at onboarding, so employers can tell verified credentials from claims. Note that voluntary status covers only the general trade — some specialized work can still carry its own separate, mandatory credential.
In British Columbia, certification for the general Welder trade is voluntary — there's no legal requirement to hold a Certificate of Qualification or Red Seal to weld. But voluntary status applies only to the general trade credential: specialized welding work can carry its own mandatory qualifications, including CWB company certification and welder qualifications for structural work governed by the BC Building Code, and Technical Safety BC pressure welder certification for regulated pressure equipment. Quantus will verify whichever of these credentials a welder holds at onboarding, so employers can tell confirmed credentials from claims.

What welding certifications are required for structural work in BC?
Structural welding governed by the BC Building Code typically requires the welding company to hold CWB (Canadian Welding Bureau) certification to CSA W47.1 or W47.2, and the individual welder performing the work to hold the applicable CWB welder qualification for that process, position, and material. This isn't one single personal "CWB certification" — it's a company certification plus individual welder qualification tests, and the specific requirement depends on the project and governing code.
What is the difference between MIG and TIG welding?
MIG (GMAW) welding uses a continuous wire feed and is faster — common on structural steel and general fabrication. TIG (GTAW) welding uses a tungsten electrode and filler rod, producing cleaner, more precise welds — preferred for stainless steel, aluminum, and critical joints.
Do welders need Red Seal certification to work in BC?
Red Seal is not legally mandatory for the general Welder trade in BC, but it signals verified skill and is often preferred by GCs and industrial employers. It's separate from the project- or code-specific CWB welder qualifications many structural and pipefitting projects require.
Do BC welders need a separate certificate for pressure welding?
Yes. Pressure welding on regulated equipment — boilers, pressure vessels, and piping — is regulated by Technical Safety BC, separately from the general Welder trade. It requires the appropriate TSBC Pressure Welder Certificate of Qualification (Class A or B) and the relevant performance qualification tests, regardless of whether the welder holds a Red Seal or general C of Q.
