What gasfitters do in BC
Gasfitting in BC uses a dual-credential model, not a single "BC Gasfitter C of Q." For new applicants, Class A and Class B gasfitters need both the applicable SkilledTradesBC Gasfitter Certificate of Qualification with Red Seal endorsement, and a separate Technical Safety BC Gasfitter Certificate of Qualification obtained through TSBC's regulatory pathway — transitional provisions apply for gasfitters who already held a valid TSBC certificate before this dual-credential model took effect. Class A Gasfitters work on all types of gas systems; Class B is limited to appliances with an input of 120 kW or less, plus related piping and vents. With natural gas heating and cooking systems standard across BC, certified gasfitters are in constant demand. Quantus connects property owners and GCs with certified gasfitters ready to work.

Gasfitter is a compulsory Skilled Trades Certification trade in BC — every gasfitter must have an authorized SkilledTradesBC status, such as being a certified journeyperson, registered apprentice, or eligible experienced worker operating under a valid Temporary Authorization. Quantus will check each gasfitter's certification against the SkilledTradesBC registry at onboarding, so employers hire on confirmed credentials, not claims.
In British Columbia, Gasfitter Class A and Class B are compulsory Skilled Trades Certification trades — but the credential is dual: for new applicants it requires both the SkilledTradesBC Gasfitter Certificate of Qualification and a separate Technical Safety BC Gasfitter Certificate of Qualification (transitional provisions apply for existing valid TSBC gasfitters). Quantus will verify a gasfitter's applicable certifications against both SkilledTradesBC and Technical Safety BC records at tradesperson onboarding.

TSBC gas certificates require periodic renewal, currently every three years (this renewal cycle does not apply to the SkilledTradesBC Red Seal).

What is the difference between a Class A and Class B gasfitter in BC?
A Class A Gasfitter is certified to work on all natural gas and propane systems, including commercial and industrial. A Class B Gasfitter is limited to appliances with a total input of 120 kW or less, plus related piping and vents — typically residential and light commercial applications, subject to Technical Safety BC's regulation.
Do I need a permit for gas appliance work in BC?
In most cases, yes — gas work generally requires the appropriate permit, with responsibility resting with the properly authorized contractor or permit applicant under the applicable authority. Exact requirements can vary by the local permitting authority and the scope of work, so check with the applicable authority before work begins.
Can a plumber do gasfitting in BC?
Not without additional certification. Gasfitting is a separate compulsory certified trade in BC, with its own SkilledTradesBC and Technical Safety BC credentials. A plumber who wants to work on gas systems must separately hold the applicable Gasfitter certifications.
