Electricians across BC

Construction Electrician is a compulsory Skilled Trades Certification trade in BC. Work within the scope of this compulsory trade must be performed by a worker with an authorized SkilledTradesBC status — such as a certified journeyperson, a registered apprentice working under proper supervision, or an eligible experienced worker operating under a valid Temporary Authorization — but this is a personal trade certification, not the same thing as the contractor licence a company holds. A Field Safety Representative (FSR) is a certified individual designated by an electrical contractor to be responsible for the work performed under that contractor's Technical Safety BC licence. A contractor licence requires at least one designated FSR, and the FSR's certificate class affects the scope of work the contractor licence covers. An FSR is a specific role tied to a contractor licence — it is not a credential every electrician holds.

A provincial Certificate of Qualification (C of Q) qualifies an electrician to work in BC. A Red Seal endorsement is a nationally recognized standard showing the electrician has met the interprovincial requirements for the trade, helping facilitate recognition of their certification in other provinces — though provincial registration, licensing, and permitting requirements can still apply outside BC.

Yes — apprentice electricians must work under journeyperson supervision as part of their registered apprenticeship in this compulsory trade. SkilledTradesBC requires employers to maintain a maximum supervision ratio of two apprentices to every journeyperson (2:1).
