What crane operators do in BC
"Crane Operator" is a marketplace occupation that covers several distinct, category-specific credentials rather than one certificate. Which one applies depends on the type of crane and the work. In BC, operating a crane in any of the three general categories — boom truck, mobile, or tower — requires certification acceptable to WorkSafeBC, administered by BC Crane Safety. Separately, SkilledTradesBC provides apprenticeship and Certificate of Qualification pathways for crane trades, and Mobile Crane Operator and Tower Crane Operator are becoming compulsory Skilled Trades Certification trades effective July 5, 2027.
We'll verify the mandatory certification each crane operator holds
Certification for this work is mandatory, but administered outside the ordinary SkilledTradesBC compulsory-trade model. Quantus will verify a crane operator's certification against the applicable regulatory body at onboarding, so employers can confirm it's current.
Crane operation in BC is regulated primarily under WorkSafeBC's Occupational Health and Safety Regulation. Section 14.34.1 requires operators of mobile cranes, boom trucks, and tower cranes (at or above the regulation's size and boom-length thresholds) to hold certification acceptable to WorkSafeBC for the category of crane they operate. That operator certification is administered by the BC Association for Crane Safety (BC Crane Safety) — it is not issued by SkilledTradesBC. SkilledTradesBC offers apprenticeable crane classifications whose program standards derive from BC Crane Safety's Crane Operator Standards. As of July 2026, Mobile Crane Operator and Tower Crane Operator are additionally transitioning to SkilledTradesBC compulsory (Skilled Trades Certification) status, with the requirement taking effect July 5, 2027 after a one-year transition; other crane categories are not affected by that change.
Mandatory operator certification. An operator must hold current certification acceptable to WorkSafeBC for the specific crane category they operate.

Trade-qualification pathway. Note: Mobile Crane Operator and Tower Crane Operator transition to compulsory Skilled Trades Certification effective July 5, 2027 (one-year transition began July 6, 2026); the hydraulic 80-tonne-and-under and boom-truck-unlimited categories are not affected.

Crane Operator questions
Who certifies crane operators in BC — SkilledTradesBC or someone else?
Mandatory operator certification for cranes at or above the WorkSafeBC OHS Regulation's size and boom-length thresholds is administered by the BC Association for Crane Safety (BC Crane Safety), not SkilledTradesBC. SkilledTradesBC separately offers apprenticeable crane trade classifications, and Mobile Crane Operator and Tower Crane Operator are becoming compulsory Skilled Trades Certification trades effective July 5, 2027 — but the day-to-day operator certification itself comes from BC Crane Safety.
