Permits in Vancouver

The City of Vancouver generally requires a permit to install, change, or upgrade a plumbing system. Some like-for-like replacements — such as an existing electric-powered hot water tank replaced with an equivalent unit — may not require a separate plumbing permit, though this can depend on the specifics of the job. Gas-fired equipment is governed separately: any gas work requires its own gas permit from Technical Safety BC, obtained by a certified gasfitter, regardless of whether the plumbing work itself needs a permit. Contractor/business-licensing requirements apply to whoever applies for the permit. Always confirm current requirements with the City before work begins.
